UK universities are confronting a financial dilemma, marked by an 11% decline in international student visa applications by July compared to the previous year, with some anticipating a drop as steep as 30%. Leaders in higher education are calling on the Labour government to abolish the £925 charge on international student fees, a policy implemented under Keir Starmer. Professor Shitij Kapur from King’s College London cautioned that dwindling numbers could jeopardize university employment. David Willetts highlighted the danger of financial strain leading to university closures, exacerbated by an eight-year freeze on domestic tuition fees. The University of Exeter has already eliminated geography courses at its Penryn campus.
