UK Theatre Faces Financial Strain Despite Record Attendance, Report Warns

publication · 2026-04-20

According to a report by the Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre, the popularity of UK theatre has reached an all-time high, with attendance figures hitting over 37 million in 2025. In London's West End alone, 17.64 million people attended, outpacing Broadway by nearly three million. Despite this success, theatres face financial challenges due to increasing production costs and stagnant ticket prices, with most UK tickets priced at £41 or lower, and West End tickets frequently under £56. This year, 36% of theatres anticipate operating at a loss, a figure that rises to 51% among subsidized venues. The report advocates for policy changes, including reforms to business rates and enhancements to Theatre Tax Relief. Co-CEOs Claire Walker and Hannah Essex emphasize the urgency of these actions to safeguard theatre as an essential cultural and economic resource in the UK.
