UK skateboarding's gritty identity captured in Neil Macdonald's 'Elsewhere'
A new book chronicles the emergence of a distinct British skateboarding identity from 1987 to 2002, contrasting with the polished US scene. 'Elsewhere: The Story of UK Skateboarding 1987–2002' by Neil Macdonald features photographs and interviews documenting the gritty, industrial landscapes and DIY ethos that defined the era. The book highlights how British skateboarders transformed abandoned warehouses and NCP car parks into makeshift skateparks, fostering a community long before social media. Key figures include Geoff Rowley, who convinced Vans to revive vulcanized shoes; Brian Sumner, who gained fame in the US; and Carl Shipman, the first to kickflip a gap at Royal Oak's Meanwhile 2 skatepark. The publication also notes the rise of British brands like Blueprint, which allowed skaters to earn a living without moving to America. Macdonald's collection spans from televised competitions on Channel 4 to spontaneous snapshots, emphasizing the raw, unpolished aesthetic of UK skateboarding. The book is set for release on 28 May by Batsford Books.
