UK Museums Launch LGBTQ+ History Month Exhibitions and Tours for 2026

exhibition · 2026-04-19

February in the UK is recognized as LGBT+ History Month, leading to various museums and galleries across the country hosting unique events. Recently revamped, Queer Britain, London's first national LGBTQ+ museum, is now open again with six themed galleries, including Resist! and Queer Creativity. The People's History Museum in Manchester has the Re/Assemble exhibit, featuring new pieces by Anna Appleby, Rachel Field, Sarah-Joy Ford, and Yuen Fong Ling until January 3, addressing the impact of Section 28. Numerous venues are providing complimentary tours focused on LGBTQ+ perspectives, such as the National Gallery's 'queer lens' tours and themed experiences at Tate Modern and the V&A. Starting March 2026, Prospect Cottage, once home to artist Derek Jarman, will be open to visitors. The Photographers' Gallery will host We Others from March 6 to June 7, displaying Donna Gottschalk's personal photographs of LGBTQ+ life in New York’s Lower East Side from the 1950s to the 1970s. Furthermore, National Museums Liverpool will showcase Gender Stories from May 16 to August 31, featuring works by artists like Catherine Opie and Zanele Muholi.
