UK Government Slashes University Arts Funding by 50%, Drawing Widespread Condemnation

institutional · 2026-04-20

Gavin Williamson, the UK Education Secretary, has announced a 50% reduction in funding for high-cost university arts courses in England, reallocating these funds to science and engineering disciplines. Consequently, the yearly grant for each full-time student will decrease from £243 to £121.50. Keith Piper, an Associate Professor at Middlesex University, condemned this move as 'cultural vandalism.' The cuts will also eliminate London weighting, significantly affecting institutions like Goldsmiths, University of London, which will see a £2 million budget cut. Professor Frances Corner cautioned that this could severely harm creative arts education. Despite these reductions, UCAS recorded 256,420 applications for arts courses by June 2021. The creative sector previously contributed over £111 billion to the UK economy before the pandemic, and further protests against these measures are anticipated.
