UK government announces £1.57 billion arts rescue package amid COVID-19 economic fallout

economy-finance · 2026-04-20

The UK government has introduced a substantial support initiative worth £1.57 billion for the arts, marking the largest investment in this sector to date. This package, which includes both grants and loans, aims to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Within this, a £1.15 billion fund is allocated for cultural organizations in England, comprising £880 million in grants and £270 million in repayable loans, alongside £120 million designated for halted heritage projects. Devolved administrations will receive a total of £188 million: £33 million for Northern Ireland, £97 million for Scotland, and £59 million for Wales. Additionally, national institutions in England will obtain £100 million. The initiative comes in response to significant financial challenges, including the closure of Nuffield Southampton Theatres and the potential bankruptcy of the Royal Albert Hall. Jo Stevens, the shadow culture secretary, has criticized the funding as inadequate.
