UK Galleries Collaborate on Female Artist Show 'Making Her Mark'
Three UK regional galleries—Penlee House in Penzance, Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, and Kirkcaldy Galleries in Fife—have joined forces for 'Making Her Mark', an exhibition highlighting female artists. The show features works by Tracey Emin, Barbara Hepworth, Laura Knight, Elizabeth Forbes, Gillian Ayres, Dod Procter, Lys Hansen, and Imogen Bright Moon. It is the first exhibition under Art Fund's £5m 'Going Places' programme, which unites 20 museums across the UK over five years. Curator Katie Herbert noted the collaboration began like 'speed dating' and focused on the historical exclusion of women in art. A key work, Dod Procter's 'Portrait of Eileen Mayo', reflects restricted access to life classes for women artists. Lys Hansen's 'Features, Fingers, Foot' depicts frustration with domestic expectations. The exhibition runs in Penzance until autumn before traveling to Worcester and Fife. Artist Kate Turner worked with care-experienced youth to create a protest banner. Future themes include heritage crafts and refugee experiences.
