Ugo Rondinone's 'Burn Shine Fly' at Venice's Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista

exhibition · 2026-04-27

At the 2022 Venice Biennale, Ugo Rondinone, a Swiss artist born in 1964 in Brunnen, transformed the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, which is Venice's oldest scuola, through his immersive artwork called 'Burn Shine Fly.' The experience kicks off in the courtyard with 'The Sun,' a bronze circle crafted from tree branches that represents both a sun and a crown of thorns. Inside the church, you'll find 'Human Clouds,' featuring seven blue polyurethane body casts that hang in the air, reminiscent of the building's 13th-century frescoes. There's also 'Still.life. (Candles),' showcasing eighty painted bronze candles scattered on the aged floor, adding to the solemn atmosphere. This exhibition was created in partnership with various galleries and includes photography by Andrea Rossetti.
