Ugo Mulas' 'The Sensitive Surface' at Lia Rumma in Naples and Milan
The dual-venue exhibition 'Ugo Mulas – The Sensitive Surface' at Lia Rumma in Naples and Milan explores the photographer's interrogation of time and the photographic medium. Curated by Tina Kukielski, the Naples venue features Mulas' contact-print sequences documenting Campo Urbano (Como, 1969), an ephemeral art event where artists like Dadamaino, Franca Sacchi, Paolo Scheggi, Elena Vicini, Giampiero Bianchi, Grazia Varisco, and Bruno Munari created transient works. Also on view are rare contact prints of Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Pino Pascali, and Andy Warhol, plus a film on Campo Urbano. In Milan, the exhibition presents Mulas' celebrated 'Verifiche' series (1970-72) and the lesser-known 'Studi per Verifica 1 – Omaggio a Niépce' (1968-70). Through these works, Mulas questions the nature of photography—sensitive surface, lens use, format, enlargement, and captioning—using the photographic surface as a mirror to reflect these inquiries back to the viewer. The exhibitions run until February 14, 2015.
