Ugo Mulas retrospective at Venice's new Stanze della Fotografia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Stanze della Fotografia, a new photography center on San Giorgio Maggiore island in Venice, inaugurated by Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Marsilio Arte, opens with a major exhibition on Ugo Mulas (1928–1973). Curated by Alberto Salvadori and Denis Curti, the show spans Mulas's photojournalism, portraits of artists and poets, and his conceptual series 'Verifiche' (1968–1972). Salvadori describes Mulas as a rare artist who also possessed the gift of exegesis, making photography both conceptual and real. The exhibition highlights Mulas's early neorealist images of Milan's night cleaners and reconstruction, his travels to Germany, Denmark, Russia, and Sweden, and his deep friendships with poets like Ungaretti and Montale. A key section is dedicated to 'Verifiche,' a meta-photographic work influenced by Marcel Duchamp, whom Mulas met in 1965. Salvadori compares Mulas to Stanley Kubrick for transcending photographic genres. The venue, designed by Studio Pedron / La Tegola with Teatro La Fenice, will host workshops and seminars. Concurrently, 'Venezia alter mundus' by Alessandra Chemollo presents 60 photographs of Venice.
