Ugo Celada Rediscovered in Major Exhibition at Labirinto della Masone

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A major exhibition titled 'Ugo Celada da Virgilio. Enigma antico e moderno' at the Labirinto della Masone in Fontanellato, Italy, runs until September 17, curated by Cristian Valenti. It showcases around fifty works by the Italian painter Ugo Celada (1895–1995), who was ostracized after denouncing Margherita Sarfatti's Novecento movement in 1931 as a 'oppressive political-commercial formation.' Rediscovered by Flavio Caroli in 1985, Celada's work is now recontextualized through three thematic rooms: early years and magical realism, portraiture, and still lifes with landscapes. The exhibition includes dialogues with contemporaries like Archimede Bresciani da Gazoldo, Virgilio Guidi, Francesco Hayez, Cagnaccio di Sampietro, Giorgio de Chirico, and Giorgio Morandi. Objects by Venini, Zecchi, Barovier, Scarpa, and Seguso accompany the works. Émile Bernard once called Celada the best Italian artist of his time. The show also features a lost 1926 'Nudo disteso' and a portrait from the Franco Maria Ricci collection.
