cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

After a 20-month renovation costing around €250,000, the Biblioteca degli Uffizi in Florence has reopened its doors. It had been closed since February 5, 2021. The restoration work emphasized structural reinforcement and the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting. Originally known as the Magliabechiana Library, it was established by Antonio Magliabechi, who left behind 30,000 volumes when he passed away in 1714. Designed by Marni and Comparini, the library was finished in 1727 and officially opened in 1747. It became the National Central Library in 1885, with volumes moved in 1935. Founded on December 16, 1998, the library contains vital documents related to the museum's history. Uffizi Director Eike Schmidt praised the restoration's significance. The library welcomes visitors Tuesday from 9 to 17 and Wednesday to Thursday from 9 to 13, offering free access for researchers.
