Uffizi Galleries Unveil €50m Revamp Across Florence Museums and Gardens

The Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence have announced a €50m renovation program described as 'unprecedented' in scope. The project spans the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, and the Boboli Gardens, including new lighting, exhibition spaces, redesigned displays, and accessibility improvements. The management promises the changes will 'radically transform the face' of Italy's most visited art museum, with completion expected within two years. Director Simone Verde stated the interventions will present 'an even better image to the world.' Half of the budget comes from ticket sales, the other half from culture ministry funds. Some projects, like the restoration of the Flemish Masters rooms, have already been completed, with the announcement delayed to avoid triumphalism. Planned work includes a €2.4m introductory exhibition space and a €4.9m conversion of the 'Piano degli Occhi' at Palazzo Pitti. The Boboli Gardens' amphitheatre and Fountain of Neptune will also be restored. This follows a separate €50m masterplan for the gardens announced in 2022.
