The Uffizi Galleries in Florence have initiated legal proceedings against fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier and his French fashion label. The lawsuit centers on the unauthorized reproduction of Sandro Botticelli's masterpiece The Birth of Venus on clothing items including t-shirts and leggings. According to the Guardian, the museum first sent a formal letter demanding removal of the merchandise from sale. When no response was received, the institution retained legal counsel to pursue compensation for lost licensing revenue estimated to exceed €100,000 (£87,750). The Renaissance painting, which depicts the nude goddess Venus, appears on various products sold in the Uffizi's own gift shop such as glasses cases, erasers, and a magnetic dress-up game. The museum claims it never granted permission for the fashion house to use the iconic artwork.
