Uffizi Galleries Set Record with 5 Million Visitors and €60 Million Revenue in 2023
The Uffizi Galleries in Florence are on track to surpass 5 million visitors by the end of 2023, marking a historic record. As of December 10, the museum complex (including Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, and Boboli Gardens) recorded 4,957,678 visits, a 27.8% increase from 2022. Revenue exceeded €60 million, up 70% from €35 million in 2022. Outgoing director Eike Schmidt, whose non-renewable term ended in November, highlighted these achievements as part of an eight-year transformation. Under his leadership, the museum organized 159 exhibitions, completed hundreds of restorations, acquired 1,800 new artworks, opened 80 new rooms, and launched the Uffizi Diffusi initiative. Digital engagement grew to 1.2 million followers across platforms, 42 virtual exhibitions, and over 600,000 free photos online. Donations, sponsorships, and loan fees reached €5.48 million in 2023, a 618% increase from 2016. Ticket prices rose to €25 in high season, but Schmidt noted numerous discounts and free entry opportunities. The museum also expanded accessibility with educational services and inclusive offerings, including sign language videos.
