Almaty-based designer Daniyar Uderbekov has revisited his UDRB modular sneaker system, a glue-free footwear concept that combines 3D printing with traditional Central Asian craftsmanship. The design integrates a 3D printed TPU sole, a leather inner boot inspired by traditional Makhsi and Ichigi footwear, and a rope-based fastening system using climbing rope and parachute fabric. Each component can be separated, repaired, replaced, and recycled, offering an alternative to conventional single-piece sneaker construction. The project emphasizes a circular design approach, eliminating adhesives to simplify disassembly and maintenance. The sole is produced via additive manufacturing, allowing customization of form and cushioning, and is made from recyclable thermoplastic polyurethane. The leather sock-boot, drawing from Makhsi and Ichigi traditions, provides ventilation and comfort and can be worn independently. The fastening system, chosen for durability and adjustability, reflects Almaty's mountainous landscape. The updated UDRB refines the original concept with improved fastening adjustments and stability, moving from prototypes toward potential production.
