Uderzo Asterix Cover Sells for $450K at Heritage Auction
An original Albert Uderzo cover painting for the Asterix album Les Lauriers de César sold for $450,000 at Heritage Auctions' International Comic Art Signature Auction on April 18–19. The sale led the auction to a total of $2.9 million. Two Uderzo Asterix works and two by Jean Giraud (Moebius) reached six figures. The cover, featuring a monumental marble profile of Julius Caesar, demonstrated Uderzo's mastery of color and composition. This marked Heritage's first offering of an Uderzo painting and a rare opportunity for collectors, as few of his cover paintings have been publicly sold, most remaining in institutional collections or the artist's estate. Asterix ranks among the five best-selling comics globally with over 380 million copies sold.
