UCCA Center to Open Third Venue UCCA Edge in Shanghai in March 2021

institutional · 2026-04-27

While museums and galleries remain largely closed across Europe and much of the world due to the pandemic, China's art scene continues to expand. The UCCA Center of Contemporary Art will open its third location, UCCA Edge, in Shanghai's emerging Jing'an district in March 2021. The new venue occupies three floors of an 18-story office tower developed by Hong Kong conglomerate K.Wah, spanning over 4,500 square meters. Director and CEO Philip Tinari stated that after a decade focused on Beijing, the institution aims to build a more national profile. UCCA was founded in 2007 in a former factory in Beijing's 798 Art District, hosting nearly 150 exhibitions and attracting over one million visitors annually. In 2019, it opened UCCA Dune, a museum integrated into sand dunes along Bohai Bay, about 300 km from Beijing. With three venues, UCCA will plan exhibitions that either travel between Beijing and Shanghai or are exclusive to one site. Tinari emphasized that each space has its own character but shares the mission that art can impact lives and create global connections, positioning China's role in the world. The cultural sector aligns with projections that China will become the world's largest economy by around 2024.
