Typoésien: Heinz Waibl and Siegfried Höllrigl in Merano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Kunsthaus Merano presents "Typoésien", a dual exhibition of graphic designers Heinz Waibl (1931–2020) and Siegfried Höllrigl (b. 1943). Waibl, born in Verona to a family with roots in Merano and Austria, lived in Milan and Chicago, and studied under Max Huber. He designed logos for Flos, Magazzini allo Statuto (1955–1959), and co-created the American Airlines logo with Massimo Vignelli. In 1988 he published "Alle radici della comunicazione visiva italiana". Höllrigl runs Offizin S. in Merano, a workshop using wood and lead type, and weekly produces a "Spiegelung" commentary on local politics. The exhibition title combines "typography" and "poetry" in German. Curated by Lioba Wackernell, Kuno Prey, Andrea Muheim, and Ursula Schnitzer, the show keeps the two artists' works separate but highlights their collaboration on the "Passerblätter" series—seven material prints made with a manual press. A public typography lab features a 1968 press named Sophie. The bilingual catalog is published by Kunsthaus Merano.
