Tyneside Cinema's Projections Commissions Insert Experimental Films into Mainstream Cinema Trailers

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

In summer 2019, Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle introduced Projections Commissions, showcasing four short experimental films in cinema trailers across the country. This project seeks to address the trend of experimental film being relegated to gallery spaces. James Richards's Uncontrollable Universe (2019) begins with a digital animation of a wilting lily, paired with disturbing visuals. Evan Ifekoya's Contoured Thoughts features tiled images of the artist submerged in water, delving into themes of identity. Splash Addict's Big Talk is a five-minute pop video characterized by DIY punk elements. Lastly, Sophio Medoidze's Xitane investigates the influence of Wi-Fi on Tusheti's culture, incorporating footage from the Atengenoba festival. All films, each under six minutes, were presented on February 22, 2019, and discussed in ArtReview's April 2019 edition.
