txt.ure and Azotea Launch Barragán Rugs Collection

exhibition · 2026-05-01

Mexico City-based studio txt.ure, in collaboration with Azotea, has released a collection of three rugs titled Barragán Rugs. Each rug requires up to two months of handcrafting by the Millán Pérez family, involving over 25,000 knots per piece and the labor of more than twelve artisans and designers. The project emphasizes co-creation between craftspeople and multidisciplinary designers, valuing slowness and transmitted knowledge. The collection explores pre-Hispanic references, translating historical cultural motifs into contemporary design without literal reinterpretation. Color research was conducted with Parisian graphic designer Helena Ichbiah of studio Ich&Kar, where color functions as compositional structure rather than decoration. Beyond the three rugs, txt.ure expands into custom pieces for interior design projects in Mexico and internationally, treating each rug as an open system adaptable to different spatial contexts. The collaboration positions design as a mediator between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary expression.
