Two Wagner exhibitions open at Teatro alla Scala in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Two exhibitions dedicated to Richard Wagner's Ring cycle have opened at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, coinciding with the centenary of the first Scala production of the Tetralogy in 1926. At the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, 'La rivoluzione del Ring – Visconti Ronconi Chéreau', curated by Giovanni Agosti with set design by Studio Margherita Palli, traces revolutionary stagings from 1974 to 1981 by Luchino Visconti, Luca Ronconi, and Patrice Chéreau. The exhibition is housed in the Biblioteca 'Livia Simoni' and features ghostly relics like Fricka's empty tunic and Siegfried's bear. Simultaneously, 'Risonanze Wagner – Visioni intorno al Ring', curated by Gianluigi Colin and Mattia Palma in the Ridotto dei palchi 'A. Toscanini', presents contemporary paintings by four female artists—Antonella Benanzato, Flaminia Veronesi, Chiara Calore, and Federica Perazzoli—each reinterpreting one of the four Ring operas. The works are displayed as uniform panels with black borders resembling playbills. Both exhibitions run until May 3, 2026.
