Two São Paulo Institutions Secure Permanent Homes After Years of Nomadic Existence

institutional · 2026-04-23

In early 2020, both the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC) and Paço das Artes finally found permanent homes in São Paulo after a long search. The IAC, founded in 1997 by gallerist Raquel Arnaud with contributions from artists Willys de Castro and Sérgio Camargo, now holds over 42,000 documents from prominent artists like Amilcar de Castro and Hermelindo Fiaminghi. Their new venue spans 900 square meters on Avenida Doutor Arnaldo, with funding from Arnaud's artwork sales. Before this, the IAC was at the University of São Paulo and Centro Universitário Belas Artes. Paço das Artes, evicted from USP in 2016, temporarily used space at Museu da Imagem e do Som de São Paulo before relocating to Casarão Nhonhô Magalhães. They launched their basement space on January 25 with Regina Silveira’s exhibition 'Limiares'. Director Priscila Arantes emphasized the commitment of both organizations to secure their new locations.
