Two Parisian Galleries Showcase Ironic Works by Delphine Renault and Matthieu Martin

Two neighboring Parisian galleries present solo exhibitions by young French artists Delphine Renault and Matthieu Martin, both characterized by humor, wordplay, and biting irony bordering on the absurd. At Galerie Marine Veilleux, Renault's "Je ne vois que de loin" (May 16–June 15, 2013) explores and mocks notions of viewpoint and landscape. A mural transforms into a bicolored fence; a wooden telescope points to the floor; the Matterhorn is reduced to a flat MDF silhouette or ceramic knick-knacks under glass domes. At Galerie ALB, Martin's "In-Cité" (May 30–July 19, 2013) humorously critiques urban space: he puts bollards on wheels, spray-paints over graffiti magazines, and proposes repainting a water tower. Both artists reject idealized visions of environment—Renault targets postcard landscapes, Martin denounces the normalization of urban space. A third nearby gallery, Sémiose, shows Laurent Proux's dark, chaotic paintings of workplaces, offering a contrasting tone.
