Two New York exhibitions revisit shaped canvases and Supports/Surfaces movement

In 2014, two exhibitions in New York explored historical art movements through the lens of shaped canvases. 'The Shaped Canvas, Revisited' at Luxembourg & Dayan, located at 64 E 77th Street, was held from May 11 to July 3 and featured 28 pieces by artists such as Frank Stella and Harvey Quaytman. Meanwhile, the Canada gallery hosted 'Supports/Surfaces' from June 7 to July 20 at 333 Broome Street, presenting 22 paintings by French artists associated with the Supports/Surfaces movement, in collaboration with Galerie Bernard Ceysson. Emerging in the 1960s, this movement blended deconstructive philosophy with Maoist concepts. Critics pointed out the Canada exhibition's catalogue lacked sufficient contextualization and American influence. Both exhibitions showcased a revisionist approach to art history in New York.
