Two Museums Dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent to Open in Marrakech and Paris
The Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent will inaugurate two museums dedicated to the late fashion designer in 2017. On October 19, a 4,000-square-meter museum in Marrakech, located in the Majorelle Gardens, will open with permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, a library, auditorium, bookstore, and café. The Marrakech site holds personal significance: Saint Laurent first visited in 1966 and purchased a home there, later acquiring the gardens in 1980 with Bergé. His ashes are kept there. Earlier, on October 3, a second museum will open at 5 Avenue Marceau in Paris, the original headquarters of the fashion house and current seat of the foundation. Designed by Nathalie Mane and Jacques Grange, the 450-square-meter space will display fifty outfits alongside accessories, sketches, photographs, and videos, alternating temporary shows and retrospectives. The Paris museum marks the historicization of the YSL brand, which closed its haute couture house in 2002 after forty years, with its final show at the Centre Pompidou on January 22, 2002. Saint Laurent died of brain cancer at age 72 in 2008.
