Two major photography exhibitions open at Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paulo
The Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paulo is presenting two significant exhibitions dedicated to foreign photographers. 'Letizia Battaglia: Palermo' showcases around 90 images, publications, and films, focusing on the photographer's work for the newspaper L'Ora. Battaglia began her career in Milan in 1971, later returning to her native Palermo to document the Mafia war over four decades, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, while also capturing the city's daily life. Curated by Paolo Falcone, the exhibition previously traveled to Palermo, Rome, and the IMS in Rio. Concurrently, 'Sergio Larrain: um retângulo na mão' offers a panorama of the Chilean photographer's work, featuring over 140 photographs, a video, and publications. Larrain served as a correspondent for the Magnum agency during the 1960s. The São Paulo version includes his work for the Brazilian magazine Cruzeiro Internacional in the late 1950s, before he was invited by Henri Cartier-Bresson to join Magnum in Paris. Curated by Agnès Sire, the show has been exhibited in Arles, various Chilean cities, Buenos Aires, and the IMS in Rio. The Letizia Battaglia exhibition runs until September 22, and the Sergio Larrain exhibition is on view until August 25. Admission is free.
