Two Major Escher Exhibitions Open in Leeuwarden and Brooklyn for His 120th Anniversary
Two major exhibitions celebrate the 120th anniversary of M.C. Escher's birth. In Leeuwarden, the Museum of Friesland presents 'Escher's journey,' a retrospective of 80 original prints exploring how travel influenced the artist, running until October 28, 2018. The city, named European Capital of Culture alongside Valletta, also hosted 'Phantom Limb: Art beyond Escher' since January. In Brooklyn, 'Escher. The Exhibition & Experience' opens June 8, 2018 at Industry City, featuring over 200 works in the largest US show on Escher. Organized by Arthemisia in collaboration with the M.C. Escher Foundation, the exhibition is curated by Mark Veldhuysen and Federico Giudiceandrea. It follows successful iterations in Rome, Bologna, Milan, Singapore, Madrid, and Lisbon, attracting over 1 million visitors. Veldhuysen and Giudiceandrea described Escher as a visionary whose influence persists in contemporary culture.
