Two Luxembourg Exhibitions Explore Visibility and Chinese Contemporary Art

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Two concurrent exhibitions in Luxembourg examine contemporary visibility and Chinese art. 'Locked In' at Casino Luxembourg (April 19–June 29, 2008), curated by Maria Rus Bojan and Philippe Hardy, features 40 works by 27 artists exploring the paradoxes of visibility in a media-saturated society. Inspired by Romanian philosopher Bogdan Ghiu's concepts of 'media-morphosis' and ultra-humanism, the show includes works by Boukje Janssen, Vera Weisgerber, Guido van der Werve, Miklos Gaál, and Thomas Hirschhorn. Meanwhile, 'China Power Station: Part III' at Mudam (April 26–September 15, 2008) presents the third iteration of a traveling exhibition conceived with Serpentine Gallery (London) and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Oslo). Curated by Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Gunnar B. Kvaran, the Luxembourg edition features video works and installations by about 20 Chinese artists, including Huang Yong Ping, Zhang Ding, Cao Fei, Yang Fudong, Liu Wei, and Hu Xiangqian. The exhibition addresses China's post-Maoist transformations, the Cultural Revolution, Tiananmen Square events, and issues of censorship and freedom of expression, reflecting the concept of 'mondialité' by Édouard Glissant.
