Two Italian Projects Advance in EUmies Awards 2026 Shortlist

award · 2026-04-26

Two Italian architectural projects have been selected among 40 works shortlisted for the 2026 EUmies Awards, the biennial prize awarded by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. From an initial 410 nominations, an international jury chaired by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić and including Carl Backstrand, Chris Briffa, Zaiga Gaile, Tina Gregorič, Nikolaus Hirsch, and Rosa Rull chose the finalists. The Italian entries are "Progetto del tempo – Recupero dell’ex chiesa di San Barbanziano" by Studio Poggioli in Bologna and "Bicocca Superlab" by BALANCE ARCHITETTURA in Milan. The former is a restoration of a 17th-century church into a circus arts center; the latter transforms a former Breda Siderurgica office into a community space. Both projects focus on reusing existing architectural heritage. The finalists will be announced within a month, and the winners will be revealed in February 2026. The award ceremony will take place on May 11–12, 2026, at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, which is the 2026 World Capital of Architecture. All 40 shortlisted works will be featured in the Out&About program starting April 2026.
