Two Graphic Novels for Holocaust Remembrance Day from Coconino Press
For Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, Italian publisher Coconino Press releases two graphic novels: 'Una stella tranquilla' by Pietro Scarnera, a reprint of his Prix Révélation-winning portrait of Primo Levi, and 'Bartali. La scelta silenziosa di un campione' by Lorena Canottiere and Julian Voloj, a new biography of cyclist Gino Bartali's wartime resistance. Scarnera's work, originally published in 2016, traces Levi's career and scientific interests, ending before his 1987 suicide, focusing on the dialogue between Levi's generation and his 'nephews'. Canottiere and Voloj's book reveals how Bartali, at the request of Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa of Florence, used his bicycle courier activities to deliver false documents and messages for the Delasem network, helping Italian Jews and refugees escape Nazi-fascist persecution after the racial laws. The volume highlights Bartali's three Giro d'Italia wins and two Tour de France victories, including his 1948 Tour win ten years after his first, a record. Both books emphasize memory as a collective heritage and tool against oppression.
