Two colossal statues of Queen Elizabeth II to be erected in St James's Park, London
For the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II's birth in 2026, London has unveiled plans for a national memorial in St James's Park featuring two monumental bronze statues of the monarch at different ages. The project, designed by Foster + Partners and expected to be completed in 2028, includes a seven-meter-tall statue of the Queen at age 28, sculpted by Martin Jennings, inspired by Pietro Annigoni's 1955 portrait. It will stand near Marlborough Gate, close to The Mall. Twenty meters behind, a statue of Prince Philip in naval uniform by Jennings will be placed. Facing the young Queen, a more intimate depiction of the aged monarch by Karen Newman will be installed near Birdcage Walk. Jennings is known for public sculptures of figures like John Betjeman, Philip Larkin, Mary Seacole, and George Orwell. Newman has created commemorative portraits including a bust of Violette Szabo. The memorial aims to reflect on time, memory, power, and intimacy. Models are on display at the British Museum until June 21.
