Two Books on Stuart Hall and Cultural Studies Published by Éditions Amsterdam
Éditions Amsterdam has released two complementary volumes on Stuart Hall, a key figure in cultural studies. The first is an intellectual portrait with an introductory text by Éric Macé and Éric Maigret, followed by an interview by Mark Alizart from the 2005 Africa Remix symposium at Beaubourg. The second is an anthology titled "Identités et Cultures. Politiques des Cultural Studies," collecting theoretical texts spanning Hall's career. Hall led the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) at the University of Birmingham from 1968 to 1979, where cultural studies emerged from the British New Left and Thatcherism before spreading internationally. The field examines cultural practices in relation to power, class, ideology, sexuality, and ethnicity, focusing on popular culture as a site of contestation. Despite its global influence, cultural studies reception in France remains limited. Hall, born in Jamaica, emphasized colonial experience and engaged with contemporary art through inIVA and the Autograph photography collective, collaborating with artists like Zeigam Azizov, Keith Piper, and Isaac Julien. The CCCS closed in 2002. The books aim to introduce Hall's thought to a French audience.
