Two Books on Paolo Portoghesi's Sacred Architecture Released in 2022
In 2022, two volumes dedicated to Paolo Portoghesi's sacred architecture were published. The first, edited by Claudio Bozzaotra and Antonio Ciniglio with photography by Mario Ferrara, focuses on the Church of the Sacra Famiglia in Fratte (Salerno), consecrated in 1974. The second, with photographs by Lorenzo Cappellini and a preface by Bishop Giuseppe Schillaci, explores the recently completed church in Lamezia Terme. Renato De Fusco describes the Fratte church as a lesson in modern architecture blending tradition and modernity. Saverio Carrillo links the design to concentric circles evoking a stone thrown into a pond and discusses its adherence to Vatican II reforms. For Lamezia, Portoghesi recalls his connection to Calabria since the 1950s. The church, dedicated to San Benedetto, features two bell towers and a ship-like form, with a porticoed piazza uniting church and town hall. In 2009, Portoghesi gifted a model of a similar project to Pope Benedict XVI, later winning the competition for Lamezia. The book includes a passage by Benedict XVI on sacred space as an invitation to God.
