Twitch Streamers Default to Amazon AI Training Unless They Opt Out

Amazon-owned Twitch has introduced a new policy that automatically utilizes creators' content to train its generative AI models, prompting considerable backlash from the Twitch community. Creators are required to manually opt out to stop their content from being used, affecting all types of channel material, including livestreams and audio, which are essential for AI training due to their diversity and quantity. During a live stream addressing the issue, Mary Kish, Twitch's Head of Community, and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton encountered nearly 3,000 viewers, many of whom voiced anti-AI opinions. Minton explained that an opt-out system was preferred over an opt-in one, as he believed few would choose to participate. He also acknowledged confusion regarding whether user content had already been utilized by Amazon for training. Kish likened Twitch's policy to Meta's approach with Facebook and Instagram, highlighting that U.K. users can opt out while others cannot. To opt out on Twitch, users must go to channel settings, access the security and privacy tab, and disable the generative AI training option. This backlash underscores wider issues surrounding consent and data usage in AI development.
