Tuwaiq Sculpture 2023 Brings 30 International Artists to Riyadh for 'Energy of Harmony' Symposium
The fourth Tuwaiq Sculpture symposium runs from January 8 to February 10, 2023, featuring 30 artists from 20 countries creating permanent public artworks for Riyadh. Curator Marek Wolynski developed the theme 'Energy of Harmony,' exploring the synthesis of opposing forces through abstract and figurative forms. For the first time, sculptors are using Saudi-sourced granite and sandstone, highlighting the country's historical connection to stone. Selected from 650 applications by a jury including Alaa Tarabzouni, Ali Al-Tokhais, Dr. Effat Fadag, and Johannes von Stumm, the artists began live sculpting on January 8 at Durrat Al Riyadh. The event includes over 65 public activities like workshops on calligraphy, lino printing, and stone carving, plus panel discussions on sculpture techniques and urban ecology. Community events take place at Durrat and JAX District in Riyadh, conducted in English and Arabic. Tuwaiq Sculpture is part of the Riyadh Art program, which aims to install over 1,000 artworks across the capital. Since its 2019 launch, the symposium has engaged 90 artists and thousands of visitors, with completed works exhibited from February 5 to 10.
