Tuscany's Contemporary Art Scene Faces Leadership Uncertainties

Florence is aggressively expanding its contemporary art offerings under Mayor Dario Nardella, cultural assessor Tommaso Sacchi, and curator Sergio Risaliti, with major exhibitions planned including Ai Weiwei at the Strozzina in September, now led by Arturo Galansino. However, the region faces leadership crises at key institutions. Alberto Salvadori is reportedly leaving the Museo Marino Marini after the appointment of new president Patrizia Asproni, leaving the museum in limbo. At the Centro Pecci in Prato, director Fabio Cavallucci, in office since March 2014, will reopen the museum after renovation with a five-month exhibition from October 2016 to March 2017, coinciding with the end of his contract. No future programming or director succession has been announced, raising concerns about continuity. Potential candidates for the Pecci directorship include Lorenzo Giusti, Sergio Risaliti, Alberto Salvadori, or a renewal for Cavallucci, but no decisions have been made.
