Tuscan Museum Network for Alzheimer's Formalized in 2020

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Established in August 2020, the Sistema Musei Toscani per l'Alzheimer (MTA) brings together over fifty museums in Tuscany to support individuals with dementia and their caregivers. This initiative emerged from an informal group formed in 2013 by the Tuscany Region and L'immaginario. Governed by a formal agreement, MTA focuses on making cultural experiences accessible to those affected by dementia, facilitated by trained museum educators. The network has forged international partnerships, beginning with MoMA in New York and extending to collaborators in Europe, Japan, and Australia. Throughout the pandemic, MTA provided online training, including a session in July 2020 with Arts & Minds, leading to 21 remote projects and 57 meetings. An online conference held on March 25, 2021, explored global dementia programs.
