Turner's Masterpieces Return to Fondation Gianadda in Martigny

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Over 100 works by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) from the Tate in London are on view at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, Switzerland, from March 3 to June 25, 2023. Curated by David Blayney Brown, the Tate's senior curator and Turner specialist, the exhibition marks Turner's second appearance at the foundation, following the successful 1999 show "Turner et les Alpes." Titled "Turner The sun is god," the exhibition is organized into seven thematic sections and includes oils, gouaches, and watercolors. Watercolor is highlighted as a key technique in Turner's practice for its ability to capture nature's intensity. The sun, central to Turner's work bridging Romanticism and Impressionism, inspired his reported deathbed statement: "The sun is God, it is a motive of joy, the most beautiful of beings." The exhibition presents Turner's mastery of light, color, and atmosphere, showcasing his enduring fascination with natural forces.
