Turner's Margate Seascape on View at His Own Sandycombe Lodge

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A remarkable seascape by J.M.W. Turner, titled Margate (?), from the Sea (circa 1835–1840), is currently on display at Turner's House in St. Margarets, near Richmond, London, on loan from the National Gallery, London. This exhibition, named “Unfinished Business: The Mystery of Margate and Turner’s Bequest,” marks the inaugural collaboration between the National Gallery and Turner's House Trust. Curated by Alan Crookham, who serves as the Chief Librarian and Archivist at the National Gallery, the exhibit delves into the intricate narrative of the Turner Bequest and the changing perceptions of Turner's artistry over the years. The artwork is showcased in Sandycombe Lodge, the residence Turner designed and constructed in Twickenham by 1813 as a retreat from the London art scene.
