Turner Prize Eliminates Age Restriction for Artists, Announces 2018 Jury

The Turner Prize has removed its long-standing age restriction that previously limited eligibility to artists under fifty. Established in 1984 with a £25,000 award, the prize originally aimed to recognize a British or UK-based artist's notable presentation from that year. The age limit was implemented in 1991 to prevent the award from becoming a lifetime achievement honor. Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson, who chairs the prize, explained that the change acknowledges artists can achieve significant breakthroughs at any stage of their careers. For the 2018 edition, the jury will include Elena Filipovic from Kunsthalle Basel, Lisa LeFeuvre of the Henry Moore Institute, novelist Tom McCarthy, and ArtReview's Oliver Basciano. Meanwhile, the 2017 Turner Prize jury features ArtReview associate editor Martin Herbert alongside Dan Fox from Frieze, Mason Leaver-Yap of Walker Art Center and LUX, and Emily Pethick from The Showroom in London. The 2017 exhibition will be hosted at Hull's Ferens Art Gallery from September 26 through January 7.
