Turin Celebrates Carlo Levi on 120th Birth Anniversary

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A series of events across Italy marks the 120th birth anniversary of Carlo Levi (Turin, 1902 – Rome, 1975), the multifaceted intellectual and painter. In Turin, the exhibition 'Tutta la vita è lontano' at GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, curated by Elena Lowenthal and Luca Beatrice, brings together thirty paintings from 1923 to 1973. Works come from the Fondazione Carlo Levi in Rome, GAM's own collection, the Pinacoteca Carlo Levi in Aliano, and private collections. The show explores Levi's geographic journey between northern and southern Italy, highlighting his expressive and realist style. A standout piece is 'Qui nascono' (1954), depicting a large peasant family from Lucania, previously shown at the Venice Biennale. The painting symbolizes the peasants' harsh life and emerging self-awareness. Levi's connection to the Resistance is also evoked. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Circolo dei Lettori, CAMERA, and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema.
