Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin Wins 2022 Hadley's Art Prize with Painting Antara

award · 2026-04-20

Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin, a senior Pitjantjatjara artist and director of Mimili Maku Arts, has won the Hadley's art prize 2022, receiving $100,000. The award, presented by Hadley's Orient Hotel in Hobart, recognizes the best portrayal of the Australian landscape and was announced on Friday. Goodwin is the first woman to win since the prize's inception in 2017. Her winning painting, Antara, depicts the Tjukurpa story of the witchetty grub from the Antara region in north-west South Australia. Goodwin learned the story as a young girl in Mimili and now teaches it to children, singing associated songs while painting. The judging panel included Judy Watson, Wayne Tunnicliffe, and Mary Knights, who praised the work as incredibly resolved with a fascinating color palette that generates movement and a performative quality. They noted diverse brushstrokes and mark-making in a raw, energetic style, describing the painting as full of life. Goodwin expressed through an interpreter her pleasure in sharing the storyline with her community and all of Australia. The prize is open to any adult Australian artist working in two-dimensional media, with an emphasis on inviting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander submissions. Goodwin's painting and those of 34 other finalists are on exhibition at Hadley's Orient Hotel in Hobart through 21 August 2022.
