Tupac Murder Trial Begins: Former Gang Leader Faces Life in Prison

The trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, the sole individual charged in the 1996 homicide of rap legend Tupac Shakur, has commenced in Las Vegas. At 63, Davis, a former gang leader, is facing charges of murder with a deadly weapon aimed at promoting or aiding a criminal gang. He has entered a not guilty plea and could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if found guilty. Jury selection began on Monday, with opening statements set for 17 August. The prosecution will rely on Davis's own admissions and a memoir he co-wrote, which he now claims contains fictional elements. Key witnesses may include Suge Knight, ex-CEO of Death Row Records, along with over 200 others, including Tupac's relatives and former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman. Furthermore, Davis has accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of offering him $1 million to eliminate Tupac and Knight, a claim Combs has refuted. Tupac was shot on 7 September 1996 following a boxing match at the MGM Grand and succumbed to his injuries six days later. The case remained unresolved for years until Davis's public remarks and book led to his arrest in 2023.
