Tunisia's Villa Baizeau campaign: Le Corbusier's only African project seeks restoration

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Founded in 2007 by Fatma Kilani, La Boîte has collaborated with Chacha Atallah from Fleury Atallah Architects to restore and inaugurate Villa Baizeau, the sole African project by Le Corbusier, constructed between 1928 and 1930 in Carthage. This villa, commissioned by Lucien Baizeau, showcases a unique fusion of kasbah architecture and traditional medina design, with plans created remotely by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Since 1960, the villa has been off-limits to visitors. The initiative features two exhibitions: 'Villa Baizeau Carthage, Le Corbusier & Jeanneret: Simple Architecture' at 32bis, curated by Roberto Gargiani, and 'Only Ruins To Be Found' at the Sainte-Monique chapel, curated by Myriam Ben Salah and Aziza Harmel, exploring the villa's inaccessibility.
