Tsuyoshi Tane: Memory as Architecture's Design Driver in Louisiana Channel Interview

architecture-design · 2026-05-27

In a recent chat with Louisiana Channel, Tsuyoshi Tane, a Japanese architect born in Tokyo in 1979 and based in Paris since founding ATTA – Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects in 2006, shared his design philosophy. He calls it the Archaeology of the Future, focusing on understanding the past to shape future designs while criticizing modern planning that treats spaces as neutral. Tane points out that much of 20th-century architecture created empty spaces instead of meaningful places. His research-driven design process blends historical, scientific, and cultural insights to uncover a site's memory. His notable projects include the Estonian National Museum (2016) and the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art (2020). He received the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2022) and published 'TSUYOSHI TANE: Archaeology of the Future' with TOTO Publications. This interview by Reyyan Dogan was first published on February 4, 2026.
