Tsherin Sherpa leads Nepal's Venice Biennale pavilion challenging Western perceptions of Himalayan art

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From April 23 to November 27, 2022, Tsherin Sherpa showcases Nepal at the 59th Venice Biennale, located at Sant’Anna Project Space One. The exhibition, titled 'Tales of Muted Spirits – Dispersed Threads – Twisted Shangri-La,' is curated by Sheelasaha Rajbhandari and Hit Man Gurung and includes collaborations with various Nepali artists and artistic traditions, such as metal sculptures and paintings. Sherpa's work challenges the Western idealization of Nepal, offering sensory experiences and emphasizing the complex histories of the Himalayas. The pavilion also highlights the declining appreciation of traditional Nepali arts due to international market influences. After training as a thangka painter with Master Urgen Dorje, Sherpa relocated to America in 1998 and previously participated in the 58th Biennale, eagerly anticipating Cecilia Alemani's exhibition.
