Tshepiso Mazibuko: Future Greats 2025
Tshepiso Mazibuko, a South African photographer born after 1994, has been named a Future Great for 2025 by ArtReview, selected by photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Her work blends conceptual and documentary photography to explore the 'born free' generation in South Africa, focusing on intimacy and male-dominated spaces. Her series 'Encounter' (2012–) documents people in Thokoza township. In 2022, she contributed to the book 'House of Story: Magnum Archive' (2024), curated by Mark Sealy, with her project 'Awukho umdlalo ongena babukeli' (There’s Always Someone Looking), which used expired film to explore time, memory, and death. Her series 'Ho tshepa ntshepedi ya bontshepe' (To Believe in Something That Will Never Happen, 2017–18) was shown at Rencontres d’Arles in 2024 and won the Louis Roederer Foundation Discovery Award. Mazibuko studied at the Market Photo Workshop (2016), received the Prince Claus Award (2018), and in 2024 also won the Public Award at the Discovery Award and the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles.
