Trump Tariffs Exempt Art and Antiques from Most Countries

In July 2026, a new tariff system was launched by the Trump administration, which mostly exempts artworks, antiques, and collectibles from import duties for many countries, according to the United States Trade Representative. The Confédération Internationale des Négociants en Œuvres d'Art (Cinoa) welcomed these exemptions, noting support from various organizations like the British Antique Dealers Association and the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN), emphasizing the unique nature of the art market. IAPN's executive director, Peter Tompa, called it "great news." However, a 50% tariff on Canadian imports is impacting dealers like San Francisco's Clinton Howell, who now buys only domestically. Meanwhile, Millicent Creech closed her Memphis gallery in May due to concerns over tariffs, and Patrick Bavasi from New York has raised prices and avoided European fairs. The new tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on items from 80 countries are linked to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, aimed at addressing forced labor. The US Trade Representative is investigating 16 countries that account for 70% of US imports, following the Supreme Court's ruling in February 2026 that the old tariff system was unconstitutional.
