other · 2026-04-20

On December 17, 2016, a group of art activists was verbally and physically attacked by individuals claiming to be Trump supporters outside Artists Space, a nonprofit in New York. This incident took place as the activists were departing from the closing event of the 'Decolonize This Place' residency. During the assault, the group shouted phrases like 'Free Palestine', 'Black Lives Matter', and 'We're Queer, We're Here, We're Fabulous, Don't Fuck With Us'. Michael Basillas, one of the victims, mentioned that no police report was made due to a lack of trust in law enforcement. In reaction, New York Shut It Down, linked to Black Lives Matter, organized a rally at Artists Space on Monday evening to protest against the displayed hatred and bigotry. Hyperallergic reported on the event, which ArtReview covered on December 21, 2016.
